Al Ain vs Al Rayyan
Competition: AFC Champions League
Date: 20 February 2018
Kick-off: 16:10 CET
Al Ain must be looking at the glass seeing it half full, going back to their group stage debut at Al Hilal last week. They drew 0-0, they earned a point against a big opponent away from home, no doubt it was a positive result. On the other hand, they had the first – and biggest – chance to score, and in the second half they missed two more good chances, so things could actually have been even better for them. I repeat though, a goalless draw at Al Hilal deserves a “job well-done”. On Friday, playing with many reserves, they practically threw their game against Al Wahda under the bus. It was a UAE League Cup quarterfinal, they had lost at home as well, in the first leg, so they seemed as if they couldn’t care less (exactly the opposite to Al Wahda). They lost 5-1.
Al Rayyan were considered favourites last week when they hosted Esteghlal, but I backed the Iranian side to earn at least a draw, suggesting draw alone as well, as my second tip. Al Rayyan captain Rodrigo Barbosa Tabata scored a crazy own-goal just six minutes into the game, but before the half-hour mark Al Rayyan were 2-1 up, and… guess who scored their second goal… Yes, Tabata was relieved, finishing off a beautiful team attacking play. They could have hold on to that 2-1, they had a couple of chances to make it 3-1, but in the 88th minute they conceded, and had to settle for a draw. Tabata, he again, had gotten sent off a few minutes earlier, seeing a second yellow card. A game to remember (or to forget), as he scored a goal, an own-goal, and saw a red card as well. On Friday, Al Rayyan drew 2-2 at home to Al Sailiya. Earning just one point from their last two matches in Qatar’s championship means that they are left nine behind leaders Al Duhail, with practically zero chances of catching up.
