Astana vs Maccabi Tel Aviv
Competition: UEFA Europa League
Date: 19 October 2017
Kick-off: 17:00 CET
Watching Astana’s game against Slavia Prague at home, three weeks ago, I was left with the impression that their coach had done a very bad job preparing the team for that match. The same Astana that beat Celtic 4-3 back in August, the same Astana that were leading 4-1 in that game until the 80th minute, made Slavia Prague look like… Barcelona, Real Madrid, or Manchester City. The hosts looked absolutely unable to follow Slavia as the Czechs created one chance after another. The fact that Astana earned a point in that game is… super flattering for them, and the least they can do is use that experience, their coach most of all, to improve. Domestically, they picked up seven points from three matches in the championship since that draw to Slavia, they remain first in the table, four points ahead of second-placed Kairat, having a game in hand as well.
Three weeks ago, when they hosted Villarreal, Maccabi Tel Aviv were considered outsiders, their double chance was at 1.80, slightly less than Villarreal’s win alone, but I backed them to earn at least a draw, and that’s what they did. Their 0-0 against the Spanish side may look kind of… poor, but that point can prove crucial. Maccabi are facing in back-to-back games the other team that have just one point from two matches so far. Whoever has four – at least – points once these two games are history, will be in a very good position to challenge for a top two spot. In two matches in Israel’s championship since their 0-0 draw to Villarreal, Maccabi picked up four points, and they are now sitting third in the table, three points behind leaders Hapoel Haifa.

This is the first game ever between these two.
Astana vs Maccabi Tel Aviv: Prediction
Astana were so, so, so disappointing three weeks ago, when they hosted Slavia Prague, that I find it impossible to back them to win this game. They may do, they could, but I feel that their displays in their two previous group matches don’t deserve my trust. I prefer to go with Maccabi’s double chance, encouraged by their decent display against Villarreal, and also their narrow, just narrow (1-0) defeat when they visited Slavia on the opening day of the group stage.
Astana vs Maccabi Tel Aviv: Betting Tips
Maccabi’s double chance pays 1.65. Draw alone, which I consider more probable than a Maccabi win, is at 3.20 betting odds.
