Atletico Paranaense vs Sao Paulo
Competition: Brazil Serie A
Date: 9 June 2018
Kick-off: 21:00 CET
A “chute do meio da rua” (a shot from the middle of the street) is what obliged Atlético Paranaense to that 1-0 defeat at Sport Recife on Wednesday. That’s according to Atlético players, who told the Press that they deserved better, and that they only lost because Fellipe Bastos tried his luck from far-far away, only to see the ball go in. Truth is, Atlético had wasted the whole first half being mere spectators on the pitch. They saw Bastos score his “wow” goal seconds into the second half, and only then they… decided to stop being as passive as they had been earlier. Based on number of chances, my opinion is that they didn’t deserve a point. They find themselves below the relegation line, on just nine points from 10 matches, which constitutes their worst start of the season in the Série A since 2011. Detail: when that season was over, they were relegated. Central defender Zé Ivaldo saw his third yellow card in Recife and is unavailable. Coach Fernando Diniz is under immense pressure, but says that things will be better before the World Cup finals break.
Sao Paulo got stuck to a goalless draw on Tuesday, at home, against Internacional. They were better during most of the game, but truth is, it was inter who finished the match looking more threatening, so, everything considered, that draw wasn’t the worst result Sao Paulo could have been left with. Attacking midfielder Nenê is back, after missing the game versus Inter. Sao Paulo are 6th in the Série A table, on 17 points from 10 matches. As visitors, they have one win, one defeat, and three draws thus far.
