Borussia Dortmund vs Atalanta
Competition: UEFA Europa League
Date: 15 February 2018
Kick-off: 19:00 CET
Losing at Real Madrid and Tottenham in the Champions League group stage was… painful, but sort of expected. Losing to the same teams at home was more painful, and a clear sign that Dortmund did not deserve to finish in the top-2. Failing to beat APOEL though, especially at home (both games ended 1-1), was… nothing less of embarrassing for Borussia. At least they have gotten (sort of) their act together in the Bundesliga since then, losing only one of their last eight matches, at home to Werder Bremen, right after their defeat at Real Madrid, in December. They have back-to-back wins, including the one over Hamburg last weekend. They are third in the table, lights of years behind leaders Bayern Munich, but just one point behind second-placed RB Leipzig. Just a couple of days ago, a top official “warned” the players that big changes may come in the summer, reflecting the board of directors’ feelings that the team have under-performed this season, and if things don’t change spectacularly in the second half, they’ll need to make drastic changes in the summer. Aubameyang is gone, but Batshuayi has started his time at Dortmund in spectacular fashion, scoring three goals in their last two Bundesliga wins.
Atalanta were one of the pleasant surprises of the Europa League group stage, winning four of their matches, including a memorable 5-1 at Everton(!!), and drawing twice away from home. They scored in every single game, kept two clean sheets, and generally looked much better than what even their own fans must have expected. Their Serie A form has been a different story. They are sitting 8th in the table, having looked very improved since late November. They have lost only two of their last 11 matches, and one of those was to leaders Napoli. They even beat Milan and Roma away from home. Actually, they beat Napoli away from home as well, on January 2, in a Coppa Italia match, a major surprise. They lost to Juventus in the first leg at home, 1-0, and have the return leg in Turin on February 28. Against Dortmund they are definitely not the favourites, but… that could work for them, especially with the return leg at home.

Borussia Dortmund vs Atalanta: Head to head Stats
Borussia have never hosted Atalanta before.
Borussia Dortmund vs Atalanta: Prediction
I’m tempted to back Atalanta to get at least a draw in Germany, seeing their double chance pay over 2.00, much better than Dortmund’s win alone, but… deep down I do expect Borussia to win the game.
Borussia Dortmund vs Atalanta: Betting Tips
Dortmund’s win is at 1.83 betting odds. For more than that, given that I expect goals, at least three, I would gamble with “Dortmund and over 2.5 goals”, at 2.60.
