Brive vs Bordeaux
Competition: French Top 14
Date: 15 April 2017
Kick-off: 14:45 CET
The next few weeks are crucial for all the sides in the top 10 and Brive really are in the thick of things as far as a playoff spot is concerned.
They are currently in sixth on the log and occupy the last playoff berth with three matches left to play. They can still make a push for a finish in the top three if they secure a couple more victories in the next few weeks. They are a point behind fourth placed Toulon and trail third placed Montpellier four points. There is a farfetched chance that they could end in second, but a third or fourth place finish would be enough, as it guarantees a home quarterfinal.
Brive made a massive statement on the weekend as they beat second placed Clermont and grabbed a bonus point for scoring four tries in that clash. The win was a huge boost as they went from ninth place to sixth in the space of the weekend, highlighting how tough the competition for spaces is so late in the season.
They need to avoid the same thing happening to them this weekend as Bordeaux look to climb up the table from ninth place. They trail Brive by four points on the log.
The visitors did well to avoid a drubbing from log leaders La Rochelle this weekend and will take confidence in the fact that they put in a better defensive effort. Their discipline cost them in the end as La Rochelle secured victory with a try, conversion and three penalties – hardly a convincing win from the form team in the competition.
Bordeaux also proved that they are a force to be reckoned with away from home. If they can cut out errors and improve their discipline, they will be competitive with Brive.
Brive vs Bordeaux: Current form
Brive bounced back from their European Challenge Cup exit with an impressive win over second placed Clermont last weekend. They are coming off a three point victory over third placed Montpellier in their latest Top 14 clash.
Bordeaux can be proud of their narrow 16-5 defeat to La Rochelle last weekend. They managed to upset Toulouse the weekend before which avenged a four point loss to Bayonne the previous week. They haven’t been consistent in results, but they’ve been competitive.
Brive vs Bordeaux: Prediction
You have to fancy the home side in this clash as they are coming off a massive win over Clermont last weekend. They did well to recover from their Challenge Cup disappointment and will be looking to move higher up the log. Bordeaux certainly won’t be walkovers but it will be tough to win this one away from home.
