CA Independiente vs Deportes Iquique
Competition: Copa Sudamericana
Date: 13 July 2017
Kick-off: 02:45 CET
Independiente finished the championship in Argentina two weeks ago feeling that they could and should have done better, taking into consideration that in their last three games they picked up ‘only’ five points, and were left at sixth place, two points below fourth-placed Racing Club (from all teams, it had to be their bitter Avellaneda rivals, Racing…), and one point below Banfield, missing out on the last ticket to next season’s Copa Libertadores. Their only chance now to play in the biggest club competition of South America next season, is to win the Copa Argentina. On Monday, Independiente signed Jonás Gutiérrez who was a free agent after his contract at Defensa y Justicia expired. Another well-known from his time in Europe player, Venezuelan defender Fernando Amorebieta signed at the Avellaneda club a few hours later. On the other hand, Chile international Jean Beausejour is leaving, since the club don’t have the money to pay the 2 million dollars needed, to Universidad de Chile (they wanted to pay in… installments, but ‘U de Chile’ rejected their request). The Chilean spent the last months at Independiente on loan. In the previous round they eliminated Alianza Lima, drawing 0-0 at home, but winning 1-0 in Peru.
Hernán Lopes, one of Deportes Iquique’s defenders, revealed that they have been watching videos of Independiente and generally ‘studying’ their Argentine opponents for over two weeks now. They definitely had lots of spare time to do that, since their last official game was over a month and a half ago. They played their last championship game in Chile on May 20, they finished 6th, eight points below champions Universidad de Chile, and six days later they played their last Copa Libertadores group stage game as well, drawing 0-0 at Guarani, in Paraguay. If they had won that match, they would be in the last 16 of the biggest club competition in South America, but finishing third in the group at least they earned the right to continue in the Copa Sudamericana.
CA Independiente vs Deportes Iquique: Head-to-head Stats
Independiente have faced four Chilean teams in the past, but not Deportes Iquique.
CA Independiente vs Deportes Iquique: Prediction
Deportes Iquique had three wins in the Copa Libertadores group stage, including one at home over Gremio, but I will be very surprised if they avoid losing this specific game.
CA Independiente vs Deportes Iquique: Tips
Independiente’s win doesn’t pay more than 1.44. Deportes Iquique haven’t played in a month and a half, it’s… impossible to know how they will look in their first official match after that long, but deep down I’m counting on the hosts to play smartly, score just enough to win, and most of all, avoid conceding. My suggestion is ‘Independiente and under 2.5 goals’, at 3.00.
