Cardiff City vs Sunderland
Competition: England Championship
Date: 13 January 2018
Kick-off: 13:30 CET
At this point, trying to explain what – the heck – is happening to Cardiff City, feels… pointless. On December 16 they beat Hull City at home, they were sitting second in the table, they were right behind leaders Wolves, and they had lost just one of their last 10 matches. Somehow though, they lost all four(!) during the hectic festive season, four defeats in a row (it feels… surreal even now, writing about it), even at Bolton and Queens Park Rangers. Plus, two losses at home, against Fulham and Preston North End. Their FA Cup third round match against Mansfield Town a few days ago, as hosts, was their chance to… draw a line, start afresh. They were hosting a League Two team, I repeat, League Two, at home, but… again, the best they managed was a goalless draw, meaning that in a few days they need to visit Mansfield Town, hoping to stay alive in the competition. Vastly disappointing these last weeks for Cardiff City, and if they don’t get back to winning in this game, playing at home against the team that are sitting at the bottom of the table, then… really, you’re left wondering… when will the Welsh side ever win…
I doubt Sunderland players, staff, fans, had high hopes for their FA Cup match at Middlesbrough a few days ago, a match they lost practically with their hands down, trailing by two goals before the first half was over. They lost 2-0, the FA Cup is already over for them, but this is the least of their troubles. They are sitting last in the Championship table, just two points behind Hull City, the first team right above the relegation line, in other words, just a win away from “escaping” from the relegation zone, but… They seem to be making… one step forward, two steps backwards. In all fairness, they have won two of their last four matches away from home, they even drew at leaders Wolves(!), but they are desperately lacking consistency, which makes it very difficult to trust them to get a positive result.

Cardiff City vs Sunderland: Head to head Stats
Cardiff City haven’t hosted Sunderland since 2013. That Premier League match ended in a 2-2 draw. Six years(!) earlier, Sunderland had won 1-0 in Wales.
Cardiff City vs Sunderland: Prediction
Cardiff City are considered clear favourites to win this, but… they have four defeats in a row in the Championship, they just failed to beat a League Two team at home in the FA Cup, and Sunderland have lost just one of their last four matches as visitors. Backing the team that are sitting at the bottom of the table to get a positive result away from home looks… almost insane, but against this Cardiff City, I feel putting some faith in Sunderland is not that crazy, after all.
Cardiff City vs Sunderland: Betting Tips
Sunderland’s double chance pays 2.10, much better than Cardiff City’s win alone, and is my only tip.
