Castleford Tigers vs Wigan Warriors
Competition: English Super League
Date: Saturday, 29th April 2017
Venue: The Mend-A-Hose Jungle, Castleford
Kickoff: 20:00 cet
Castleford saw their lead atop the table dwindle away to just differentials last weekend, when Hull managed to edge them by 2 points, leaving them with an 8-3 record after the first full round of competition. This fine record ensures them that if they repeat these efforts in the upcoming 11 rounds, or go close to that, they will easily be in the top-4 and primed for an all out assault on the premiership. Ever improving Australian half, Ben Roberts was again outstanding for the Tigers, even though they lost, with a lack of goalkicking ability the major factor that saw the result go awry for Castleford.
Wigan are back to near their best after the awful period, which coincided with a crippling injury toll, and can leapfrog the Tigers into at least 2nd with a win here, as they are currently on 15 premiership points, with a 7-3-1 record. Last Sunday, they were 20 points too good for the Dragons, with Tom Davies, Liam Forsyth and Joe Burgess all scoring 2 tries, while Davies excelled in go forward with 309 metres gained. The overall go forward was the decisive factor for Wigan, as they ran for nearly 600 metres more than the Dragons, which is an incredible feat.
Cloudy, but dry conditions are forecast for this Saturday evening fixture, which should bring out a healthy crowd, as the two competition forerunners do battle. These two sides are very evenly matched, though the Warriors do still have one superstar sidelined in the form of Sam Tomkins, who would add another elite dimension to their already lethal attack.
Castleford Tigers vs Wigan Warriors: Head to Head Stats
After the comprehensive win just a few weeks ago, the Tigers have now won 2 straight matches against Wigan, with margins of 17 and 14, giving them some confidence. However, before those matches, which date back to August 2016, Wigan did string together 4 wins in very relevant recent fixtures, as the teams are now set to meet for a 7th time since September 2015.
These teams appear to be on juxtaposed streaks, with Castleford having lost two in a row and Wigan stringing together 3 straight victories. Though those 3 wins were much needed for Wigan who lost 3 straight before that and were in dire need of a victory. Morgan Escare was good for Wigan with 2 tries, on April 6th while Gale was the difference between the two sides, with a crucial try, 5 goals and a field goal for good measure.
Castleford Tigers vs Wigan Warriors: Prediction
The match a few weeks ago was without key stars Joe Burgess and Sean O’Loughlin who will provide plenty of quality for Wigan, while Castleford were near full strength and need to find their winning form if they are a chance of taking the win here. Bookmakers do have Castleford as slight favourites for this clash with a handicap margin market of around a try, and the Tigers more than $1 shorter than the Warriors in the outright result market.
Overall, though Wigan have been the more impressive team since the Easter bonanza and will be looking to make a real competition statement as they strive to defend their premiership. Joe Burgess is a real addition to that team as is O’Loughlin, with both possessing the abilities to change the game in a heartbeat. This means the likes of Gale, Roberts and the big-men forwards such as Lynch and Millington and McMeeken will all need to match the more decorated Wigan veterans.
Castleford Tigers vs Wigan Warriors: Tips
- Wigan to win in an epic by less than 6.
- Joe Burgess to score a try.
