Chapecoense vs Coritiba
Competition: Brazil Serie A
Date: 3 December 2017
Kick-off: 20:00 CET
Chapecoense were considered underdogs last weekend when they visited Bahia, their double chance was at 2.05 betting odds, I didn’t think twice before suggesting it, and turned out, they did even better than what I expected, they actually won the game, 1-0. They took the lead seconds before the end of the first half, got lucky in the second half when a Bahia player found the post from the penalty spot, and protected that narrow lead until the end, earning a precious victory. They are 9th in the table, they are the best performing (based on results) Serie A team in the last five game weeks (three wins and two draws), and they have very-very good chances of playing Copa Libertadores football next season, as long as they win this match. Actually, if they pick up all three points against Coritiba, they have chances of earning a direct ticket to the group stage, as long as Vasco and Botafogo don’t win their games. On another note, these last days were very emotional at Chape, as the club, the city of Chapeco, and the whole of Brazil actually, remembered the victims of the plane crash, exactly a year ago.
Not even one of the biggest refereeing mistakes of the entire season proved enough to save Coritiba last weekend. They hosted Sao Paulo, and took the lead in the 43rd minute from the penalty spot, despite the fact that it was a Coritiba player who had touched the ball with his hand inside Sao Paulo’s box, not the visitors’ defender. Incredibly, the referee, his closest assistant who was standing just 3-4 meters away, even his other closest assistant, all three missed it, gifting Coritiba a penalty. The hosts needed the win to secure their presence in the Serie A next season as well, but… divine justice(?), two Sao Paulo goals in the second half left Coritiba empty-handed, sitting 16th in the table, right above the relegation line. If they beat Chape, they don’t care what the other three (teams that are threatened with relegation) do. If they draw, they get in serious-serious trouble.

Two wins and a draw in the three, no more, games between these two in the past, all after 2014. Only one of those three matches had more than one goal.
