Gremio vs Atletico Goianiense
Competition: Brazil Serie A
Date: 26 November 2017
Kick-off: 20:00 CET
Historic days for Gremio, as they are very close to lifting the Copa Libertadores trophy, for the third time. Midweek they beat Lanus 1-0 at home, and right after this game against Atletico Goianiense they are traveling to Argentina for the return leg, having a “small, but important advantage”, as their coach called it. Last weekend they lost 1-0 at Santos playing with a totally alternative squad, which, though, did great in the first half, outplaying the hosts, at least until they went down 1-0. The irony of the thing was that Santos scored at a point when Gremio were threatening in all possible ways. The good thing that came out of that game/defeat is that it was proven, once again, that Gremio’s roster has depth. Enough to cover the loss of key players (if they sell at the end of the season)? Depends on how the incoming money will be used. Gremio are second in the championship, but that’s a minor detail at this point. Right now, they live and breath for the return leg at Lanus.
If Atletico Goianiense manage to avoid relegation, their story would be worth a movie shot for them. They are on 34 points, after their hard-fought 1-1 draw at home to Chapecoense last weekend. To play in the Serie A next season as well, they need two wins in their two remaining matches, even two… 1-0, and they also need Avai, Ponte Preta and Sport Recife to get no more than one point in their last two games. All three! And that’s not all. They also need Vitoria to lose both their last two games. If aaaall these happen, then Atletico will avoid relegation. It feels life on earth coming to an end due to a ghost meteorite, not spotted by satellites, hitting us, is more probable than Atletico Goianiense avoiding relegation. Their last-minute goal last weekend kept them alive mathematically, but…
