Independiente FBC vs Olimpia Asuncion
Competition: Paraguay Apertura
Date: 5 February 2018
Kick-off: 23:00 CET
Independiente de Campo Grande are hosting Olimpia in a top division match because on December 17 they beat Rubio Ñu in a… final, the playoff match that decided which of the two would remain a top division team. Inde finished 6th in the Apertura last June, but last (12th) in the Clausura, in December, they got in major trouble, and needed that “final” to secure their presence among Paraguay football’s “big boys” for another season. One thing is for sure, they showed character in that playoff match against Rubio Ñu, despite having looked anything between… “bad” and “awful” for months before that game. Their roster leaves a lot to be desired, but then again, putting things into perspective, you couldn’t expect them to be at Olimpia’s level, or even at the level of teams sixth and lower. Unless something… spectacular, miraculous happens, they should be 10th and below, come the end of the first half of the season.
Two hours before kick-off on Thursday, when Olimpia’s bus arrived at Defensores del Chaco, the streets leading to the stadium were already full of people, who gave their players a warm welcome. When the players jumped on the pitch for their warm-up, 45 minutes before kick-off, the stands were almost totally full, close to 40,000 people eager to see their team beat Junior and earn an advantage ahead of the return leg in Barranquilla. Olimpia did win, a Roque Santa Cruz header in the first half produced the game’s only goal, the advantage is small but definitely important, mostly the fact that Olimpia didn’t concede (for that, they needed their goalkeeper to record at least two great saves). The “King of Cups” is traveling to Colombia right after this match, and the fact that they have the return leg in Barranquilla sort of obliges coach Daniel Garnero to… come up with a special plan for this game against Independiente. Some regulars could get rested, depending on their physical condition after Thursday’s match.

Independiente FBC vs Olimpia Asuncion: Head to head Stats
One win for Olimpia (3-1) and a 1-1 draw between these two in 2017, with Independiente as hosts. Before that, they hadn’t faced each other since 2012 (another 1-1 draw).
Independiente FBC vs Olimpia Asuncion: Prediction
If it were another team, not Independiente, I would risk with their double chance, counting on the fact that Olimpia just played a very demanding game against Junior, and have an even bigger game coming up in Colombia. I just don’t believe in Independiente though.
Independiente FBC vs Olimpia Asuncion: Betting Tips
Olimpia’s win pays 2.20. For much more than that, I’m putting my trust in their defence and goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet.
