Jeju United vs Cerezo Osaka
Competition: AFC Champions League
Date: 14 February 2018
Kick-off: 11:45 CET
Finishing third in last season’s K-League was enough to earn Jeju United a direct ticket to the AFC Champions League group stage. This is their third appearance, and first time they make it in the competition in back-to-back seasons. Last year they had an absolutely crazy-crazy run in the group, winning only one of their three home games (2-0 over Gamba Osaka), but earning seven points on the road, triumphing 4-1 at Gamba(!!), 2-1 at Jiangsu Suning in China, and even drawing 3-3 at Adelaide United. In the round of 16 they shocked another Japanese rival, Urawa Reds, beating them 2-0 in Korea. In the return leg, the tie went to extra time, with Jeju United playing with 10 men. They finally lost 3-0, finished the game with eight players, and, be reminded, Urawa Reds went on to win the trophy, which makes Jeju United’s achievements against them all the more impressive. The new season in Korea starts on March 1, so they haven’t played an official game since November 19.
Cerezo Osaka won the Emperor’s Cup in Japan last season, earning a direct ticket to the AFC Champions League group stage. Unlike Jeju United, they have played one official game recently, the Super Cup against K-League champions Kawasaki Frontale. They won 3-2, more easily than what the score suggests (they had a two-goal advantage for most of the game). This is their third appearance in the AFC CL, first after 2014. Back then, they picked up eight points from their six group games, qualified for the last 16, even beat Guangzhou Evergrande 1-0 away from home in the return leg, but their… fate was already known, they had gotten butchered 5-1 at home in the first leg.

Jeju United vs Cerezo Osaka: Head to head Stats
This is the first game ever between these two.
Jeju United vs Cerezo Osaka: Prediction
The hosts are seen as favourites to win the game, but I like the chances of Cerezo Osaka leaving Korea with at least a point. They looked very good in the Super Cup against Kawasaki Frontale, so I feel confident enough to back them to leave Korea undefeated.
Jeju United vs Cerezo Osaka: Betting Tips
Cerezo’s double chance pays 1.57, and their win in “draw no bet” 2.10. A… middle solution is to go for “over 2.5 combined goals”, at 1.85, not worrying about winners and losers. I expect an early goal, which will open the game up.
