Kawasaki Frontale vs Shanghai SIPG
Competition: AFC Champions League
Date: 13 February 2018
Kick-off: 11:00 CET
Kawasaki Frontale are the 2017 J-League champions, a title that set them up on a Super Cup “date” with Cerezo Osaka last weekend. Kawasaki lost 3-2, failing to start the new season lifting yet another trophy. It was their first official match in over two months, and they definitely looked below par, losing 2-0 early in the second half, and never really troubling Cerezo. This is their sixth appearance in the AFC Champions League. They had a… crazy run last season, starting the group stage with four draws in as many matches, but winning the last two to qualify for the last 16. Muang Thong United picked up the ball from their net no less than seven times in the two games against Kawasaki, and in the quarterfinals it looked like Frontale were on their way to yet another triumph. They beat Urawa Reds 3-1 at home, they even took the lead in Saitama in the return leg, but ended up losing 4-1(!), playing with 10 men for more than half the match.
Shanghai SIPG finished second in last season’s CSL, a position good enough to give them a ticket to the playoffs. They faced Thai Cup winners Chiangrai United at home, and beat them by the slightest of margins, 1-0, thanks to a goal early in the second half. That was their first official match since late November, and… you could tell, as they lacked sharpness. This is their third appearance in the AFC Champions League. Last season they made it to the semifinals where they faced Urawa Reds (that’s something they… share in common with Kawasaki Frontale, they got eliminated by the same team last season). They drew 1-1 at home, and lost 1-0 in Saitama, looking… blocked by Urawa’s impressively solid defence in those two games (as well as in the finals that followed against Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal).

Kawasaki Frontale vs Shanghai SIPG: Head to head Stats
Kawasaki Frontale have hosted four Chinese teams in the past, but not Shanghai SIPG.
Kawasaki Frontale vs Shanghai SIPG: Prediction
I expect to see Kawasaki Frontale more motivated than their opponents, more determined, more passionate, and win the game, most-most probably by one goal.
Kawasaki Frontale vs Shanghai SIPG: Betting Tips
Kawasaki Frontale +0.0 asian handicap (same as draw no bet) pays 1.61 . Unlike their weekend game against Cerezo Osaka which had five goals, I don’t expect this one to have more than two. If you don’t share my trust in Kawasaki, go for “under 2.5 combined goals”, at 2.07 betting odds.
