Lechia Gdansk vs Slask Wroclaw
Competition: Poland Ekstraklasa
Date: 1 December 2017
Kick-off: 20:30 CET
If you’re a VAR fan, if you feel that technology is football’s friend, not enemy, then you should be glad knowing that the system has been used since the start of the season in Poland, and the results have been very-very-very encouraging, VAR has helped referees correct mistakes, important mistakes, match-defining mistakes. Then again, there have been a few cases that the referees made incredibly wrong decisions not during the normal flow of a game, but after seeing things on a screen(!!). Last weekend’s Lechia defeat at Cracovia is an example. A Cracovia player went down inside the box in the first few seconds of added time, the ref and his closest assistant said “play on”, but after seeing on a screen what had happened, the referee actually pointed at the penalty spot(!!!). The three exclamation marks have to do with the fact that Lukasik, Lechia’s player, did have a contact with Hernandez, Cracovia’s player, but it was too-too-too obvious that the contact was “sought after” by Hernandez, it wasn’t provoked by Lukasik, Hernandez kept his eyes on his opponent (you can tell, in one of the replays), and the moment he felt the contact, he went down, showing no interest in continuing with the ball. The referee “rewarded” Hernandez for his attitude, leaving Lechia’s players in disbelief. Regardless of the referee’s inexplicable decision, truth is Lechia should have done a much-much better job finishing the game off after taking the lead in the 64th minute. They started playing too deep, showed zero interest in counterattacking, and they got punished, losing the game 2-1. “Both teams to score” (1.75) and “over 2.5 goals” (2.00) were my two tips in that match, but I repeat, there was no penalty in added time, the referee made an awful decision, abusing the “privilege” of having a screen to see exactly what had happened.
What a match in Wroclaw last weekend, when Slask hosted Zaglebie Lubin. Both teams had several chances to score and take the lead, with Slask getting saved on four-five occasions by their goalkeeper and Zaglebie’s wastefulness. Even 25 seconds before the 90-minute mark, Woźniak missed an incredible chance for Zaglebie, not his first one in the game. Three minutes of added time were given, but somehow the referee let the game go on for an extra minute, with Slask earning a foul. Seventy seconds after the referee should have blown his whistle for the last time, Celeban pushed the ball in with his head, giving Slask a dramatic 1-0 victory. Despite the way it happened and… how – too – late it happened, Slask’s win earned them a major “well done”, given that they were playing without several key players, but still managed to get what they wanted/needed. They finished last weekend 9th in the table, leapfrogging Lechia Gdansk.

Lechia Gdansk vs Slask Wroclaw: Head to head Stats
Lechia have back-to-back home wins over Slask, but before that, the Wroclaw side had won three games in a row in Gdansk. Four of those five matches went over 2.5 goals.
Lechia Gdansk vs Slask Wroclaw: Prediction
Lechia are considered favorites to win the game, they had back-to-back wins (keeping clean sheets) before losing at Cracovia… the way they lost, but personally I’m backing Slask to earn at least a draw. No matter what, I see goals, from both sides.
Lechia Gdansk vs Slask Wroclaw: Betting Tips
Slask’s double chance pays 1.90, slightly better than Lechia’s win alone. “Both teams to score” is at 1.72 betting odds, and feels very probable to me.
