Libertad vs Guarani
Competition: Paraguay Apertura
Date: 11 February 2018
Kick-off: 00:20 CET
Libertad know they were rather… flattered by that 2-2 they earned last weekend at Sportivo Luqueño. If football was like other team sports in which it’s really the best team – on a certain day – that wins, Libertad would have lost, and maybe lost big. They salvaged a point with their last-minute goal, having looked second best on the pitch practically for 90 minutes. Judging by what they told the media the following days, they sort of… got the message, they know they need to improve, and improve a lot, fast. Good thing for them is that they have already secured their presence in the Libertadores group stage, while Guaraní have two more “finals” against Junior, starting the coming week, before making it to the group stage, and that may distract them.
Scoring six goals is rare, and definitely catches your attention. Seeing the same team score six goals in back-to-back games is… surreal, but that’s exactly what Guaraní managed in their last two matches. Last weekend they started the Apertura campaign thrashing Sol de América 6-2, despite the fact that they were playing with several reserves, because they had a big Copa Libertadores game coming up. Midweek, they hosted Carabobo, from Venezuela, having to deal with a negative result in the first leg, a 1-0 defeat. First seconds of the match at Defensores del Chaco, first goal for Guaraní, who finished halftime at 2-0, scored again seconds into the second half, and… they simply kept going, finishing with an incredible 6-0. They were a joy to watch (unless you are a Carabobo fan), 12 goals in three days, a… hard to believe achievement.

Libertad vs Guarani: Head to head Stats
Two wins for Libertad, one for Guaraní, and two draws, in the last five games between these two with Libertad as hosts. Only Libertad’s victories, both by 3-2, went over 2.5 goals.
Libertad vs Guarani: Prediction
Despite Guaraní’s incredible form and Libertad’s poor performance last weekend, I’m actually backing the hosts to win, expecting them to look vastly improved.
