Libertad vs Racing Club
Competition: Copa Sudamericana
Date: 25 October 2017
Kick-off: 02:45 CET
Libertad drew 1-1 at Santa Fe five weeks ago to secure a spot in the Copa Sudamericana’s quarterfinals (they had won 1-0 at home in the first leg), but amazingly, they have lost five of their seven games since then, five! They have four consecutive defeats, the last one coming just last weekend, at home, 3-2, to Cerro Porteno. In a league (Paraguay’s top division) that has no more than 12 teams, Libertad are sitting 11th(!) in the table, 14 whole points behind leaders Cerro Porteno. They have conceded 11 goals in their last five games, another number that shows in what a tough spot Libertad are at. If somehow they qualify, they will match their best run in the competition, which was back in 2013, when they reached the semifinals.
Racing Club can be proud of having eliminated in this season’s Copa Sudamericana (in the previous round) the leaders of Brazil’s Serie A, Corinthians, without even losing to them. They drew 1-1 in Sao Paulo, and the goalless draw in Avellaneda in the return leg was more than enough to see them through to the quarterfinals. Just like Libertad, they have started their domestic championship poorly, having picked up eight points from six matches. Last weekend they beat Tigre 1-0 at home, their first win in any competition since September 10, which was even before their first game against Corinthians. Lautaro Martínez, a 20-year-old center-forward who is tipped to cross the Atlantic within a year or two to play in Europe, is included in the squad that traveled to Paraguay, but is not really expected to play. He just spent four months on the sidelines, after a serious injury. Diego Cocca is expected to start the game with Juan Musso, Augusto Solari, Sergio Vittor, Miguel Barbieri, Lucas Orban, Alexis Soto, Marcelo Meli, Egidio Arévalo Ríos, Andrés Ibargüen, Lisandro López and Enrique Triverio, sticking to his preferred “five men on the back” system.
