Melbourne Victory vs Ulsan Hyundai
Competition: AFC Champions League
Date: 13 February 2018
Kick-off: 09:30 CET
Melbourne Victory made it straight to the group stage of the AFC Champions League as runners-up of last season’s A-League. No playoffs for them, unlike Brisbane Roar, who failed big, losing at home to Ceres from the Philippines(!). Ironically, Brisbane beat Victory in Melbourne last weekend, 2-1. It was Victory’s third defeat in a row in the A-League, where, with two thirds of the season gone, they are anything but sure that they will be in the top-6 by the end of regular season, with a spot in the playoffs. That 2-1 against Roar is actually somewhat misleading, as Victory were 2-0 down by the 28th minute, and only got one back very late in the game. This is their sixth appearance in the AFC Champions League. Last time they competed was two years ago. Back then, they qualified for the last 16, where they got eliminated by Jeonbuk Motors, drawing 1-1 at home, and losing 2-1 in Korea in the return leg.
A major difference between Melbourne Victory and Ulsan Hyundai is that the Korean side haven’t played an official match since early December. The new season in Korea hasn’t started yet, so Ulsan have only played friendly games these last two months. Last season they finished third in the K-League, a position good enough to give them a ticket to the playoffs. They won the Korean Cup though, and that’s how they got into the group stage avoiding the tricky playoff procedure. This is their sixth appearance in the AFC Champions League. Last season they didn’t manage to finish in the top-2 of their group. Interestingly, they did win two matches back then, and both were against another A-League team, Brisbane Roar. They thrashed them 6-0 in Korea, and beat them in Brisbane as well, 3-2.

Melbourne Victory have hosted five South Korean teams in the past, but not Ulsan.
Melbourne Victory vs Ulsan Hyundai: Prediction
Melbourne Victory are given a slight advantage to win the game, they have been playing regularly week in week out while Ulsan haven’t played an official match since early December, but… I just don’t trust the hosts, not with three losses in a row in their championship, two of those at home.
