Monagas vs Gremio
Competition: Copa Libertadores
Date: 16 May 2018
Kick-off: 02:30 CET
This won’t affect the outcome of the game, but it’s worth mentioning, I reckon. Tickets for this game, this LIBERTADORES game, with the current TITLE HOLDERS visiting, cost 30000 and 60000 bolívares, meaning about 35 and 70 cents of a euro. Yes, CENTS of a euro, according to the official exchange rate. Monagas’ 1-0 home win over Defensor Sporting in their last game, has kept them alive in the fight for a top 2 spot. Realistically though, the third position is more attainable, and will mean at least two more international games this year, in the Copa Sudamericana, after the World Cup finals. Last weekend they beat Metropolitanos 1-0 at home. They are 13th in the table in Venezuela’s championship, but there is just one game left in the Apertura, and Monagas have zero chances of finishing in the top 8 to play in the final series.
Important detail: Gremio traveled to Venezuela with just five regulars. Marcelo Grohe, Cortez, Geromel, Kannemann and Ramiro, they are the only regulars who flew with the group, but it’s not sure they will start the game. Brazilian media give Marcelo Grohe, Madson, Kannemann, Geromel, Cortez, Ramiro, Michel, Jaílson, Cícero, Alisson and Thonny Anderson as the most probable starting lineup, but I have my doubts, especially for Geromel and Cortez. Gremio are leading in the group, on eight points from four matches. Even if the… unthinkable happens, and they lose this game, they still have the last one at home, against Defensor Sporting. On Saturday, they drew 0-0 at home to city rivals Internacional, a game which Gremio should have won, based on how the two teams looked in all 90 minutes. There was a lot of tension, especially towards the end of the match, and in the Press conference after the game the coach of Gremio went that far as to call Inter “a small team, a Série B team”(!).

The game in Porto Alegre earlier in the group stage was the first ever between these two.
Monagas vs Gremio: Prediction
Yes, Gremio will play with several reserves, but don’t be misled, even their reserves are awesome players, who see this game as a fantastic chance to show things. Actually, I expect Gremio to look better in this game, than in the one they played at Cerro Porteño (0-0) with an almost full squad.
Monagas vs Gremio: Betting Tips
Gremio’s win pays 1.55. “Over 2.5 goals” is at 2.07, and these two combined offer an even better 2.62.
