Panathinaikos vs Lamia
Competition: Greece Cup
Date: 10 January 2018
Kick-off: 18:30 CET
It’s been three weeks now, but there are still Panathinaikos people who say the first leg against Lamia shouldn’t have been played, not that day (December 21), not with the weather the way it was, extreme, at least by Greek standards. The game did take place, and the Greens lost 4-1(!). They were 3-0 down by halftime, conceding twice in the last three minutes of the first half. Molins’ goal in the 82nd minute gave them hope, but Lamia scored again in added time, turning a… relatively “manageable” (for Panathinaikos) 3-1, to a much harder to deal with, 4-1. Last weekend, Panathinaikos beat Platanias 2-0 at home. They were hosting the weakest team in the Super League, but still, they needed two penalties in the last 20 minutes to score, not to mention that in the meantime Platanias were left with 10 men. It doesn’t look good for Panathinaikos, who are after a small miracle to remain alive in the Cup.
It’s not just the score of the first leg that gives Lamia a huge advantage over Panathinaikos. That 4-1 alone is obviously big, but Lamia have looked decent away from home since the start of the season, taking into consideration this is their first time competing in the Super League. They have lost three games, two of those three scores would cost them (if repeated at Panathinaikos) the ticket to the quarterfinals, but… PAOK, AEK and Atromitos are a class higher than Panathinaikos this season. Lamia lost 4-0 at PAOK, 3-0 at Atromitos, and 2-0 at AEK, but I repeat, those three, this season, are a class higher than Panathinaikos. All in all, it feels… not impossible, but really very-very-very hard to imagine Lamia conceding three goals to a team that haven’t scored three (or more) goals at home since March(!), and that was against lowly Veria, a team that ended up getting relegated in May.

Panathinaikos vs Lamia: Prediction
Panathinaikos, despite their endless problems on and – mostly – off the field, will still play for their history, their own pride. I don’t expect them to qualify, but I do expect them to win the game.
Panathinaikos vs Lamia: Betting Tips
A simple Panathinaikos win pays 1.36. My main tip last weekend when they hosted Platanias was “under 2.5 goals”, it paid off, only one of their last nine matches has gone over 2.5 goals, but this is a… special game, a Cup match, in which the Greens need to score a lot, taking unavoidable risks. Bottom line, I like “over 2.5 combined goals”, at 1.95 betting odds. “Panathinaikos and over 2.5 goals” pays 2.20.
