Persepolis vs Al Wahda
Competition: AFC Champions League
Date: 8 May 2017
Kick-off: 17:25 CET
Persepolis may be sitting third in the group table, but up to a point, they are holding their fate in their own hands. A win over Al Wahda, will give them two chances to qualify. They could leave Al Rayyan third, if they lose or even draw to Al Hilal. In that case, Persepolis would finish higher than Al Rayyan. Even if the Doha side win, Persepolis could still qualify, leaving Al Hilal third. In that case, it will come down to goal difference. Persepolis and Al Hilal have two points each in their games against each other, having scored one goal each. Right now, Al Hilal have a +2 record in all group matches, but if they lose, that will go down to at least +1. Persepolis are at -1, and a win by just one goal would push them to 0. So, the bigger their win over Al Wahda, the more chances they will have to leave Al Hilal third, if they lose at Al Rayyan. Persepolis haven’t won in their last three games in all competitions, drawing twice and losing once.
Al Wahda are sitting last in the table, but their 5-1 triumph over Al Rayyan two weeks ago has given them hope. They absolutely need to beat Persepolis, which looks anything but easy, and at the same time they need Al Hilal to beat Al Rayyan in Doha. If these two happen, Al Wahda and Al Rayyan will both finish with seven points, they have three points each in the two games they’ve played against each other, but, Al Rayyan beat Al Wahda just 2-1 at home, while Al Wahda thrashed Al Rayyan 5-1 when they hosted them two weeks ago. Al Wahda have one defeat and one draw in their last two domestic games, scoring four goals, but conceding five.
Persepolis vs Al Wahda: Head-to-head Stats
Persepolis have hosted Al Wahda once before, in 2011, in a game that ended in a 1-1 draw. In the two games between these two in the UAE, each team have one victory, with the Iranian side winning 3-2 earlier this season.
Persepolis vs Al Wahda: Prediction
I expect Persepolis to win, but their victory pays little, so I’m counting on the game to have at least three goals, which looks very probable, given that both teams need to win, and especially Persepolis may need a big win (in case Al Hilal lose at Al Rayyan).
Persepolis vs Al Wahda: Tips
A Persepolis win pays just 1.50. Over 2.5 goals pays 1.80, which could be considered good enough by some, avoiding all ‘who wins/who loses’ worries. I do expect Persepolis to win though, and that to happen in a game that will have at least three goals. This pays considerably better than both 1.50 and 1.80.
