Santiago Wanderers vs Melgar
Competition: Copa Libertadores
Date: 31 January 2018
Kick-off: 01:30 CET
What a bittersweet time to be a Santiago Wanderers fan. The team are competing in the Copa Libertadores qualifiers, with some chances of making it to the playoffs, and… who knows, miracles happen, even to the group stage. They won the Copa Chile last year, this is how they earned the right to be here. On the other hand, they failed big in the championship, even in the playoffs, and amazingly, the coming season they will be competing in Chile’s second division(!). A few days ago they lost the Super Cup to Colo Colo, no surprise. It should be mentioned this is only the third time Wanderers are competing in the Copa Libertadores. In 1969(!) they made their debut, they returned in 2002, finishing third in their group both times. This is a historic occasion for them, but… marred by their relegation.
Melgar are here as champions of Peru’s Torneo de Verano 2017, a title won eight months ago(!). They finished 9th in the Apertura in August, 3rd in the Clausura in December, and haven’t played an official match since December 3. Last year they made it directly to the Copa Libertadores group stage, where they actually started with a huge 1-0 win over Emelec (Guayaquil, Ecuador). Those were the only points they earned, as they lost the following five group matches, despite scoring four goals (two and two) against River Plate, first away and then at home (they conceded a total of seven). Generally, they allowed at least two goals per game, making them a… joy to play against, for every opponent in the group. Melgar fans went to Arequipa’s airport to wish the players all the best. Santiago Wanderers are – now – a second division team in Chile, but… still, a team from Chile, something Melgar players pointed out before leaving Peru.

Santiago Wanderers vs Melgar: Prediction
Santiago Wanderers are considered clear favourites to win the game, but I have serious doubts. I’m backing Melgar to avoid defeat.
Santiago Wanderers vs Melgar: Betting Tips
Melgar’s double chance is at 2.15 betting odds. Draw alone pays 3.50, and I find it much more probable than a Melgar win.
