Sheffield United vs Sheffield Wednesday
Competition: England Championship
Date: 12 January 2018
Kick-off: 20:45 CET
Five days after earning a big 1-1 draw at second-placed Derby County, things at Sheffield United got even better, beating Ipswich Town 1-0 away from home, in a third round match of the FA Cup. United are sitting 7th in the Championship table, just one point behind 6th-placed Leeds United, they are still active in the FA Cup, but they definitely need to improve their home record. Looking at it, you are left with the impression that United are a team struggling to avoid relegation. They have won just one of their last five games as hosts, drawn once, and lost no less than three times, even to Bolton Wanderers, a team fighting to stay above the relegation line. It’s worth noting that no top-9 Championship team have conceded more than United, a clear indication that to climb up the ladder they need to work on how they do things defensively.
Unlike United who are through to the fourth round of the FA Cup, Sheffield Wednesday got stuck to a goalless draw at Carlisle United, not a result Wednesday should be proud of, given that their opponents compete in the League Two, not even League One. There is a replay at home in a few days, Wednesday will be given the chance to finish the job off against their lowly opponents, but there is no doubt they would have preferred avoiding having to play that game. One positive that came out of the match at Carlisle United was that Wednesday kept a clean sheet, after conceding five goals in their last two Championship matches, including three to Burton Albion, at home, a real shock for them. They lost 3-0 as hosts to a team that were and remain below the relegation line. Wednesday are sitting 16th in the table, they have just one win in their last 10 Championship matches, and if they don’t get their act together soon, they’ll start… approaching the relegation zone dangerously.

Sheffield United vs Sheffield Wednesday: Head to head Stats
United haven’t hosted Wednesday since 2011. That League One match ended in a 2-2 draw. Two years earlier, United had won 3-2.
Sheffield United vs Sheffield Wednesday: Prediction
There is no doubt United are in a much better place right now, compared to Wednesday, but first and foremost, this is a big local derby, the first time United host Wednesday in seven years. Then again, Wednesday do have that big FA Cup game on Tuesday, a… distraction, for sure. All things considered, I’m backing the hosts to win.
Sheffield United vs Sheffield Wednesday: Betting Tips
United’s victory pays 1.85. It’s not huge, but I consider the game too tricky to take an even bigger risk with a better-paying special bet. If I absolutely had to choose something paying better than 1.85, I would go with “United and under 2.5 combined goals”, at 4.00, not expecting Wednesday to score, and also not expecting United to push the score higher than just necessary to pick up all three points.
