Southampton vs Huddersfield
Competition: England Premier League
Date: 23 December 2017
Kick-off: 16:00 CET
Just one win (and three draws) in their last nine Premier League matches have left Southampton 12th in the table, looking nothing like the team that had just one defeat in their first five games this season. Last weekend they lost 1-0 at Chelsea, which, in a way, compared to the 4-1 home embarrassment to Leicester City just three days earlier, was definitely an… improvement. Two points from their last five matches is a very poor tally, better only than that of Newcastle and Watford (in the last five game weeks). Good thing for them is that they are hosting Huddersfield Town with a rather full squad, so this is their opportunity to “catch” their visitors on 21 points, and start climbing back up into the top half of the table.
Seeing them sit 11th in the table, it’s rather safe to claim that Huddersfield Town have been over-achieving thus far this season. Two wins in their last three matches, including an impressive 4-1 at Watford last weekend, have boosted their morale, realizing that they do have what it takes to fight until the end to stay in the Premier League for another season, and maybe, just maybe, finish closer to the upper half of the table, rather than struggle to avoid relegation until the last couple of weeks of the season. Their win at Watford was particularly important, as it came after five consecutive defeats away from home, and seven matches as visitors in which they had failed to score. Seven! It’s… kind of surreal, that they scored three goals at Crystal Palace back in August, in their first top division away game since 1972(!), they then went to not scoring a single goal in seven away matches, but still, last weekend, scored four(!) past Watford.

Southampton vs Huddersfield: Head to head Stats
Southampton hosted Huddersfield twice in 2010, beating them 4-0 and 5-1. Before that, they hadn’t hosted them since 1971(!).
Southampton vs Huddersfield: Prediction
What will it be this time for Huddersfield? No goals scored and defeat, like in six of their seven away games before last weekend, or 3-4 goals scored and victory (like at Watford and Crystal Palace)? I’m taking the risk to back them to earn at least a draw, despite the fact that Southampton are considered that big favourites to win that their victory pays just 1.60.
Southampton vs Huddersfield: Betting Tips
Huddersfield’s double chance pays 2.30, and I consider it risky enough to avoid messing around with other special bets.
