The Strongest vs Lanus
Competition: Copa Libertadores
Date: 7 July 2017
Kick-off: 00:15 CET
The Strongest’s coach, César Farías, looked almost annoyed in a Press conference before this game, when asked about La Paz’s altitude and how important he expects this detail to prove. He said the team do not depend on the altitude -alone- to win games, and he ‘reminded’ everyone that according to statistics, The Strongest create an average of 25-30 ‘dangerous situations’ in their opponents’ box at home, something that wouldn’t happen if the team didn’t work well offensively. The championship in Bolivia ended a week ago, The Strongest finished second, nine points behind clear champions Bolivar. In the group stage of the Copa Libertadores they finished three points below leaders Santos, and one above third-placed Santa Fe from Bogota.
Lanus can have their conscience clear. They made it to the last 16 of the Copa Libertadores mostly because Chapecoense used an ineligible player against them, on the penultimate day of the group stage. Officials of Lanus not just pointed out to their counterparts of Chapecoense the mistake they were about to make, but almost… asked them to reconsider, because, as they said, they didn’t want to win the game in papers. The Brazilians went on to make the silliest mistake possible, they won the game in Argentina, but just before their last match in the group they were informed that Conmebol had punished them, Lanus had won the game in papers indeed. In Argentina’s championship, which ended a week ago, Lanus put up a brave fight in the last weeks, but failed to finish in the top four (and secure Copa Libertadores football for next season). All they managed was eighth, a position good enough to earn them a ticket to Copa Sudamericana. Left-back Maximiliano Velázquez is back, after missing the last three games of Argentina’s championship due to an injury. Goalkeeper Fernando Monetti traveled with the group to Bolivia, it’s the first time he is available after his serious injury in December, but is expected to stay on the bench. Center-back Marcelo Herrera got injured in training on Sunday, and stayed in Buenos Aires.
The Strongest vs Lanus: Head-to-head Stats
The Strongest have faced seven clubs from Argentina in the past, but Lanus are not among those.
The Strongest vs Lanus: Prediction
I expect the hosts to win, and to score more than once.
The Strongest vs Lanus: Tips
‘Over 1.5’ for The Strongest is at 1.72. I’m counting on the game to have a third goal (from either side), so I’d take the risk to bet on ‘The Strongest and over 2.5 goals’, which pays much better, 2.50.
