Universidad Catolica vs Atletico Paranaense
Competition: Copa Libertadores
Date: 18 May 2017
Kick-off: 02:45 CET
Universidad Catolica had the Copa Libertadores as their priority this season, but somehow it didn’t work out for them. They started well with five points in three matches, but their defeats to San Lorenzo and Flamengo have left them last. Still, they will qualify if they beat Atletico Paranaense, and, simultaneously, in the game that will be played at San Lorenzo, the Argentines lose to Flamengo, which look rather improbable. Last weekend, Catolica beat Deportes Iquique 2-0 at home, and secured a spot in the Super Cup final, against Colo Colo. It was their first positive result after two consecutive defeats to Flamengo and Huachipato.
Atletico Paranaense had a golden opportunity to practically secure their presence in the last 16 of the competition two weeks ago, they were hosting San Lorenzo, even a draw would be a pretty ok result, but… they lost, lost big, 3-0, they even lost the advantage over the Argentines (they had beaten them 1-0 in Argentina), so now they no longer depend on themselves, they need a result that will be better than the one San Lorenzo get against Flamengo. Last weekend, on the first day of the new Brazilian championship, Atletico Paranaense got humiliated at Bahia, humiliated, as in… 6-2(!!), and that was their third defeat in their last five games, no wins, just two draws. Attacking midfielder Carlos Alberto is finally back, which is huge news for Atletico. He is their most creative player, and missing him since March 7 was really a problem. Center-forward Pablo is also available, having recovered from an injury. Right-back Jonathan could reappear as well, another one who just got over an injury.
Universidad Catolica vs Atletico Paranaense: Head-to-head Stats
The two teams drew 2-2 earlier this season in Curitiba, in what was the first clash ever between them.
Universidad Catolica vs Atletico Paranaense: Prediction
Atletico Paranaense have important players back, but I doubt they will be at their best. Catolica… well, I just don’t trust them enough to back them to win. All in all, I’m leaving winners and losers aside in this game, and I’m going with goals.
Universidad Catolica vs Atletico Paranaense: Tips
Over 2.5 goals is at 1.80, which I consider very good, because these are two teams that will need to attack and score and win, since no other result will be good enough for them, unless something far-fetched happens at San Lorenzo, and they are, for example, 2-0 down at halftime, against Flamengo, in which case a draw will be enough for Atletico. Still, only for them, not Catolica.
