AEK Athens vs Panionios
Competition: Greek Super League
Date: 17 May 2017
Kick-off: 17:15 CET
Rather few expected AEK to beat PAOK in Thessaloniki, but they did, and just like that, they are first in the table, having already played against PAOK away from home, big advantage for the Athens side. Attacking midfielder and captain Petros Mandalos will most probably miss the game. He got injured in the match against PAOK, and even though his condition is not too serious, it looks like coach Manolo Jimenez will protect him against Panionios, so as to have him for sure at his disposal on Sunday, in the clash with Panathinaikos. AEK have lost two of their last three home games, but that was against Panathinaikos (championship, regular season) and Olympiakos (return leg of a Cup semifinal), so they were not… shocking results. Losing to Panionios would definitely be a mini-shock.
Given how Panionios have been doing since early April, that 1-1 draw to Panathinaikos on Sunday was a success, albeit a small one, given that the ‘Greens’ were playing with ten men since the 12th minute(!). Even so, Panathinaikos took the lead before the first half was over, and Panionios only managed a draw. It looks like Panionios will decide, up to a point, who will finish top of the table in the playoffs, in the sense that the more points a team drop against Panionios, the less chances they will have to finish top. Milojevic, the coach of Panionios, said after the game that his team’s main problem was the lack of rhythm, because they had not played a competitive game in two weeks. The same was true about Panathinaikos as well, though, so…
AEK Athens vs Panionios: Head-to-head Stats
AEK have won four of their last five home games against Panionios, without even conceding a goal. Their last game in this year’s regular season was a goalless draw, the first positive result for Panionios at AEK in years.
AEK Athens vs Panionios: Prediction
AEK should win. Simple as that. They definitely bounced back from their defeat in the Cup final, while Panionios failed to beat a Panathinaikos who were playing with ten men for more than 80 minutes (including added time).
AEK Athens vs Panionios: Tips
AEK’s win pays just 1.45. I feel confident that they will pick up all three points without conceding, which is at 2.05. Panionios have not scored in their last three games on the road, and even when they were doing well, they were still struggling offensively away from home.
