AEK Athens vs PAOK
Competition: Greece Super League
Date: 3 February 2019
Kick-off: 18:30 CET
Marinos Ouzounidis and Petros Mandalos, AEK’s coach and captain respectively, told reporters that a win in a derby (like this one against PAOK) is more than three points earned. The reigning champions are 14 whole points behind leaders PAOK, their chances of reaching them are slim even if they win this one, but at least there will be hope. If they draw, let alone lose, it will be all over, and even finishing second, so as to play in the Champions League qualifiers next season, will be super tough. Midweek, they beat Levadiakos at home, 1-0, looking poor in the second half. Probably distracted as well, unwilling to… go the extra mile, having already scored, taken the lead, and controlling the game. AEK are hosting the team they won the championship title against, last season, the team that claims that title was… stolen by AEK. Also, PAOK are the ones who beat AEK in the last two Greece Cup finals. AEK’s motive is huge, no matter if retaining their Super League title feels almost like mission impossible.
Eighteen matches into the season, PAOK are leading, eight points ahead of Olympiakos, and 14 ahead of AEK. Also, they are the only team left undefeated in the Super League, having 17 wins(!), and just one draw. They have scored more than any other team, and have conceded just seven goals, as many as AEK, so these are the two teams with the best defending records in the league. One thing is for sure, PAOK’s players haven’t forgotten how they lost the championship title last season; they feel it was “stolen” by AEK, and whether that feeling is well-based or not, it does give PAOK an extra motive against the Athens side. Midweek, they struggled to beat PAS Giannina at home, despite being far superior. A match that should have ended 5-0 (Giannina’s goal came from an offside position), was decided by an 87th-minute goal, scored by Polish striker Karol Świderski, on his debut (some way to make… new friends in Thessaloniki).

AEK are considered slight favorites to win the game. I’m tipping PAOK to stay undefeated, and I won’t be surprised if they win the match.
