AEK Athens vs Rijeka
Competition: UEFA Europa League
Date: 23 November 2017
Kick-off: 21:05 CET
AEK are second in the group table after four matches, but interestingly, Rijeka are the only team they have beaten so far. That 2-1 in Croatia was followed by three draws, two of those against Milan, goalless, both, leaving the Athens side with six points from four matches. In two weeks, AEK are visiting Austria, to whom they have drawn 2-2 at home, meaning that they have to avoid finishing level on points with them. Despite missing key players, like Mandalos, their captain, and Johansson, the Swedish midfielder who got seriously injured in his national team’s game in Italy, in the World Cup playoffs, AEK seem determined to finish the thing off by beating Rijeka. Even a draw though would be a welcome result (as long as nothing… crazy happens in Milan, and local AC don’t lose to Austria Vienna). Bottom line, AEK feel confident enough that if need be, they will get a positive result in Vienna, in two weeks, a draw, at least. Last weekend they drew 1-1 at Panathinaikos, thanks to a last-minute Livaja goal. They are sharing the top spot in Greece’s Super League with PAOK.
From paradise, to hell. Rijeka hosted Austria Vienna three weeks ago, having beaten them 3-1 in Vienna a couple of weeks earlier. An hour into the game, the score was at 1-1, Rijeka had just equalized, and they had the momentum on their side, to push for a win that would boost their chances of a top-2 finish. Final score, 1-4(!!), totally collapsing in the last half hour, especially after getting left with 10 men in the 72nd minute. Rijeka retain mathematical chances of qualifying, but for that to happen, they absolutely must beat AEK. The gap between these two is at four points, meaning that even a draw won’t be enough for the Croatians, regardless of what they do in two weeks at home against Milan. Generally, Rijeka are going through a very bad period, with four losses in their last six matches, just one win, and that in Croatia’s Cup. They are 4th in their championship, having picked up just one point from their last five matches(!).

AEK Athens vs Rijeka: Head to head Stats
Their game earlier this season, was the first ever between these two.
AEK Athens vs Rijeka: Prediction
AEK are considered so big favorites to win, that their victory pays just 1.67. Following mostly a hunch, rather that… objective analysis of both teams’ current situation, I’m actually backing Rijeka to surprise Europe, leaving Athens with at least a point. Win? I doubt, but a point, no matter how… useless it will be for them, yes, I can see them earn that.
AEK Athens vs Rijeka: Betting Tips
Rijeka’s double chance pays 2.15, and is my only tip. Draw alone pays, obviously, much better, 3.70, it feels way more probable than a Rijeka win, but personally I feel even 2.15 is good (and risky) enough to stick to that.
