AEK Larnaca vs Levski Sofia
Competition: UEFA Europa League
Date: 25 July 2019
Kick-off: 17:30 CET
AEK Larnaca are a Cypriot team, as much as a… Spanish one; they have nine Spanish players, one who has dual citizenship (so, that’s 10), and even their coach comes from Spain. Imanol Idiákez has been in charge since January. AEK faced Petrocub from Moldova in the first qualifying round, and sure, they qualified, but not without worrying their fans. At home, in the first leg, they took the lead just a couple of minutes into the game, but failed to build on that. In Moldova, last week, they were at 0-0 until added time, a Petrocub goal would have pushed the tie to extra-time, and actually one of their players did score, but… it was an own goal, and that’s how AEK won again. Those two were the first official matches they played in two months, so we should except to see them look better against Levski.
Levski seem to have an advantage over AEK for three reasons; first, at least on paper, they have a better roster. Second, instead of… struggling to eliminate modest Petrocub in the first round, they easily kicked out Ruzomberok, beating them twice by the same “clear” score, 2-0. Third, Levski have played four official matches these last two weeks, so they had more opportunities to gain game rhythm, which is very important this early in the season. Last weekend they got stuck to a goalless draw at Etar in their championship, they could have done better, but it’s worth noticing that in four matches the last 15 days they have conceded only one goal.

AEK are considered favorites to win, but I was left unimpressed by their performances against Petrocub, so I would risk with Levski’s double chance.
