AEK Larnaca vs Ludogorets
Competition: UEFA Europa League
Date: 25 October 2018
Kick-off: 18:55 CET
Cypriot side AEK Larnaca started their game at Bayer Leverkusen three weeks ago without a single Cypriot player in their lineup. There was Apostolos Giannou, a Greek-Australian, but no Cypriots. They had six Spaniards, and a seventh one came off the bench in the second half. The only Cypriot who played was Dimitris Raspas, who substituted Giannou in the 89th minute, and scored AEK’s second goal (3-2) two minutes later. The Larnaca side lost 4-2, having taken the lead in the first half, but having looked rather naive defensively. Then again, versus a team with Leverkusen’s roster, their mission was super tough to start with. They are without any point from two matches in the group. In their championship, they are fourth, on 10 points from four matches, six points behind leaders AEL, but with two games in hand.
Given how the whole game went, Ludogorets may be right feeling that they deserved to leave Zurich with a point, earlier this month. The two teams had the same attempts (less than 10 each one), practically the same ones on target, 50-50% ball possession, and at the end of the day, what made the difference was that Zurich made one of their super few chances really count, in the 84th minute. Other than that, the game had too many fouls, 43(!), so you can imagine that not much football was played, with all those whistles and stops. Ludogorets are without a point after the first two matchdays in the group. On Saturday, they earned a big home win over Levski Sofia in their championship, in Bulgaria. They are now first in the table, on 29 points from 12 matches, one point above both Levski and CSKA Sofia.
