AEL Larissa vs Apollon Smyrnis
Competition: Greece Super League
Date: 12 January 2019
Kick-off: 16:15 CET
AEL Larissa hosted Asteras on Wednesday, in the first leg of their Greece Cup round of 16 tie with the Tripoli side, and despite having (incorrectly) a goal annulled, they still won 3-2, taking an advantage ahead of the return leg. Larissa’s people managed to clear the field off just in time for the referee to accept to start the game (it was full of snow), and truth is, the pitch was in pretty bad conditions (some Asteras player called it “dangerous”, and I would agree), but, at the end of the day, both teams played on the same field, and Larissa’s win was well-deserved. It was their first game in three weeks. They are 11th in the Super League table, on 15 points.
Unlike AEL, Apollon Smyrnis lost on Wednesday, when they hosted Atromitos. To be more exact, they didn’t just “lose”, they already got eliminated in the Cup, as the 0-3 of the first leg is practically impossible to get overturned in the second game between the two teams. The difference in quality between the two, and the fact that Atromitos have the return leg at home, come together to pretty much call Apollon already eliminated. That’s actually the least of their problems; just five points in the Super League, from 14 matches, have them at the bottom of the table, looking rather doomed to get relegated at the end of the season.
