AEL Larissa vs Panionios
Competition: Greece Super League
Date: 1 December 2018
Kick-off: 16:15 CET
“We never got into the game”. That’s what Gianluca Festa, AEL Larissa’s coach, told reporters minutes after his team’s 2-0 defeat at Asteras Tripolis last weekend. They stayed at 0-0 until the 55th minute, and only conceded that second goal in added time, so… someone could say they stayed in the game until the very last moment, but in reality, they didn’t threaten Asteras, they were only… physically present on the field, nothing more than that. It was their first loss in five matches, Super League and Greece Cup combined. AEL are sitting 11th in the table, on 11 points from as many games. Every now and then you hear voices from Larissa saying that AEL’s target is bigger than just “avoid relegation”, but personally I seriously doubt they have the roster needed to finish anything better than their current position.
José Anigo, Panionios’ coach, was honest, talking to reporters after his team’s 1-0 win over Lamia last Monday; “we didn’t play well, thankfully we won, all we keep is the three points and the last half hour of the match”, the Frenchman said. The Nea Smirni side needed a Giorgos Masouras 84th-minute goal to beat Lamia, after having looked… blocked, the whole team, in most of the match. Panionios have three wins in a row in the Super League, without having conceded a single goal. They are 8th in the table, on 17 points from 11 matches. On another note, 24 hours before this game’s kick-off, Panionios hadn’t decided yet what to do with Srdjan Spiridonovic. The Austrian-Serbian winger was late returning from his homeland last week, Panionios can’t just let that go, but seems like they prefer avoiding pushing things to… extremes. It won’t come as a surprise though, if, after all, he leaves the club during the winter transfer period.

A 0-0 draw, and a 2-0 AEL win in the two games between these two in Larissa the last two years. Before that, they hadn’t played there since 2010.
