Al Wahda vs Al Ittihad
Competition: AFC Champions League
Date: 11 March 2019
Kick-off: 16:00 CET
Last season, Al Wahda lost 5-0 at Lokomotiv Tashkent, and then again 1-4 at home, both matches in the group stage. With this in mind, the fact that last week they lost to the same team “only” 2-0, in Uzbekistan, could be seen as a… step forward (I’m being half-ironic). Al Wahda went 1-0 down less than five minutes into the game, and by the 20th minute they should have conceded again, probably more than once. They were incredibly-incredibly lucky to stay in the game until added time, which is when Lokomotiv finally scored a second goal. Given how the game went, Al Wahda should be feeling… privileged to have “escaped” Uzbekistan with a respectable score on their back, and not another 5-0. No domestic competition game for them since then.
“Al Ittihad have left a lot to be desired lately, but I am counting on them to… draw a line, win this one”. This is what I wrote a week ago, before Al Ittihad’s home game against Al Rayyan (in front of empty stands, a sad sight), suggesting their win at 2.25. They went 0-1 down in the 23rd minute, but two super late goals in the first half turned the situation around, and a third one in the 48th minute gave them a comfortable two-goal lead. They went on to win 5-1, a resounding victory, followed up by a 2-0 victory at home on Friday, over Al Feiha, in Saudi Arabia’s championship (Serbia international Aleksandar Prijovic scored his first two goals for the club). They remain super low in the table, 13th(!), on 19 points from 23 matches, but as newly-appointed coach Luis Sierra pointed out, the team have the roster to cope with the challenge, avoid relegation, and do well in the Champions League as well. The Spaniard took over after Slaven Bilic’s departure, a couple of weeks ago.
