Alianza Lima vs River Plate
Competition: Copa Libertadores
Date: 7 March 2019
Kick-off: 01:30 CET
Alianza Lima finished second last season in Peru’s championship, good enough to earn them a direct ticket to the Copa Libertadores group stage. Last year they drew with Boca Juniors in their first group match, and went on to lose their next five games(!). If you think that looks bad, do know that they finished the group stage having scored just one goal(!), and having conceded 13. On Sunday they beat César Vallejo 3-1 at home, easily, leading 3-0 by the 41st minute. Miguel Ángel Russo, their Argentinian coach, complained and complained and complained (before and after the match) about the fact that his team were made to play on Sunday, and not on Saturday, claiming that an extra day of rest/preparation would be crucial.
River Plate were… a joy to watch on Saturday, when they hosted Newell’s Old Boys. Up 2-0 by the 24th minute, 3-1 at halftime, they went on to win 4-2, playing, during parts of the match, some really pleasing to the eye football. Temporarily, they climbed up into the top four of the Superliga in Argentina, but Atlético Tucumán won their game later, and River fell back fifth. Only the top four teams have for sure a place in next season’s Copa Libertadores. The championship in Argentina has four game weeks left, before the start of the Copa de la Superliga, which is practically a… prolongation of the season, with the winner of that new competition earning another Copa Libertadores ticket.

Alianza Lima vs River Plate: Head to head Stats
Alianza first hosted River in 1966, losing 0-2. In 1998 they did better, drawing 1-1. They haven’t played against each other in Lima since.
Alianza Lima vs River Plate: Prediction
I think the timing is great for River Plate to win the game. They have five wins and two draws in their last seven Superliga games in Argentina, having rediscovered the form that made them Copa Libertadores champions least year.
Alianza Lima vs River Plate: Betting Tips
Given that a simple River win pays less than 1.50, I would risk with combining that with “under 3.5 goals”. Like that, it pays 1.93. Combined with “under 2.5 goals” River’s victory pays 2.95.
