APOEL vs Qarabag
Competition: UEFA Champions League
Date: 6 August 2019
Kick-off: 19:00 CET
APOEL looked awesome last week at home against Sutjeska (3-0), finishing off what they had started in Montenegro a week earlier. Serbian striker Andrija Pavlovic scored a hat-trick, netting the first two goals before the 25th minute. Bad news for APOEL was that Musa Al-Taamari, their exciting to watch 22-year-old Jordanian winger, got injured, and on Sunday it looked like he was being ruled out of the first leg. Coach Paolo Tramezzani said maybe it would be better to let him recover, no pressure, so as to have him available for sure in the return leg, in Azerbaijan. Giorgos Efrem could do Al-Taamari’s job, but the 30-year-old Cypriot has been left out of APOEL’s list for the third qualifying round, not really getting along with his coach. The championship in Cyprus hasn’t started yet, so those two games against Sutjeska in the second qualifying round are the only official ones APOEL have given thus far this summer.
Just like APOEL, Qarabag won 3-0 at home last week, but unlike their Cypriot rivals, they stayed… worried until late in their return leg against Dundalk. Qarabag were at 1-0 until the 76th minute. With the first leg having ended 1-1, they were just one goal away from seeing their tie with the Irish go to extra-time. Ailton made it 2-0 with about 15 minutes left, and at that point, it was all over. Qarabag have played two official games more than APOEL this summer, against Partizani Tirana, in the Champions League first qualifying round. Up to now, they have won both games at home (keeping a clean sheet as well), and have drawn in both on the road. Needless to write, neither Partizani nor Dundalk are even near APOEL’s level.
