Aris vs PAS Giannina
Competition: Greece Super League
Date: 3 February 2019
Kick-off: 18:00 CET
Big, big, big win for Aris midweek, at Xanthi, a 0-1 over a direct rival in the fight for a Europa League ticket. The Thessaloniki side played with lots of guts, took the lead in the 37th minute thanks to a Mateo García goal, and protected that lead until the final whistle. They didn’t dazzle anyone with their football, but in games like that, not even your fans expect you to play fantastic football; they expect you to play with a lot of determination, stay focused, fight for every ball, and that’s what Aris did, and got rewarded with three points of pure gold. They are now 6th in the table, on 26 points. If they finish there, most-most probably, depending on what happens in the Cup as well, they’ll play Europa League football next season. On another note, on Thursday, they signed Giannis Fetfatzidis from Olympiakos. There was a time that “Fetfa” was considered probably Greece’s “next big thing”. He never reached the level expected and hoped, he failed to make himself necessary at Olympiakos the last six months, but he is still 28, it’s not too late for him to… draw a line, and go back to being admired by every football fan in Greece.
PAS Giannina gave Super League leaders PAOK a real scare midweek, equalizing in the 52nd minute, in what was their only dangerous visit to PAOK’s box in the entire match. Actually, there was offside at the start, the goal shouldn’t have counted, but the assistant referee missed it. Giannina lost 2-1 conceding again in the 87th minute. Before that, they had… excelled at wasting time, taking “unfair play” to… stratospheric levels. After the match, Giannis Petrakis, their coach, told reporters he never instructed his players to waste time, it was a… natural reaction, trying to steal a point from a much-much better team away from home. They are 13th, on 17 points. Centre-forward Sandi Krizman is out due to cards.
