Arka Gdynia vs Piast Gliwice
Competition: Poland Ekstraklasa
Date: 28 February 2017
Kick-off: 20:30 CET
Arka’s double chance and “under 2.5” goals (expecting a 0-0 or 1-1) were my two tips last weekend when the Gdynia side visited Zaglebie Lubin, and the game ended in a goalless draw. Arka were almost totally harmless offensively, and they allowed an… unusual numbers of chances to Zaglebie, but even so, they got what they wanted, a point. Arka have the second best defending record in the championship, only Lech Poznan have conceded less than them, but offensively they leave a lot to be desired. Their roster, offensively, is rather poor, and didn’t really improve during the winter transfer window. They picked up just two points from their last four matches, and they are sitting 8th in the table, level on points with 9th-placed Zaglebie Lubin.
After losing all those chances, several of those big ones, in the second half, the final 0-0 at home against Wisla Krakow felt… poor for Piast Gliwice. They were the better team on the pitch, managing to play some attractive football despite the bad condition of the field (the weather in the area has been harsh for days, it had snowed, and especially in the second half the surface was… way less than stellar). Piast earned a point, kept a clean sheet, so there are definitely positives they take from that 0-0 against Wisla Krakow, but I’m left with the impression that they had the chances to earn all three points. As for their coach’s choice to keep leaving Michal Papadopulos on the bench, that’s just beyond me. Piast are a much more “happening” – offensively – team with the Czech/Greek striker in their lineup, as it was proven once again in the last 30 minutes last weekend, the period of the game that he played in.
