Arsenal vs Burnley
Competition: England Premier League
Date: 22 December 2018
Kick-off: 13:30 CET
Last weekend, Arsenal visited Southampton having stayed undefeated in 22 consecutive matches, in all competitions. In something over 72 hours, between Sunday and Wednesday, they lost twice(!), first in the Premier League, and midweek to Tottenham in the League Cup, a painful 0-2 home defeat. They are fifth in the championship, on 34 points, three behind 4th-placed Chelsea. They are expected to start with Leno, Lichtsteiner, Koscielny, Monreal, Bellerin, Mkhitaryan, Xhaka, Iwobi, Guendouzi, Torreira and Aubameyang. Bellerín’s name has an asterisk next to it, as he has been dealing with a minor injury. Mustafi, Holding, Welbeck and Mavropanos are out, injured. Arsenal lost to Tottenham in the League Cup at home on Wednesday, but in the Premier League they have two wins in a row at Emirates, and the first one of those was exactly over Spurs, a thrilling 4-2, earlier this month.
Just like Arsenal, Burnley’s last game was against Tottenham, a 1-0 defeat at Wembley last weekend. Actually, Spurs needed an added-time goal by Christian Eriksen to win the game. Twelve points have Burnley below the relegation line, 18th in the table. They have won just one of their last 10 Premier League matches, a 1-0 over Brighton at home, earlier this month. If there are no late surprises, they will start with Hart, Tarkowski, Mee, Bardsley, Long, Westwood, Taylor, Brady, Cork, Lennon and Barnes. They have three guys dealing with injury problems, Defour, Ward and Pope. Burnley have conceded 33 goals in 17 matches thus far. Only bottom-of-the-table Fulham have allowed – way – more than that (42). Away from home, they have earned one point from their last five matches, thanks to a goalless draw at Leicester.
