Atletico Goianiense vs Chapecoense
Competition: Brazil Serie A
Date: 19 November 2017
Kick-off: 20:00 CET
“Both teams to score”, at 2.45, was my only tip when Atletico Goianiense visited Botafogo midweek, explaining that I expected Atletico to score (taking it almost for granted that favorites Botafogo would do so as well). The Goias side took it a major step further, scoring twice, to earn a big 2-1 victory in Rio de Janeiro, over a team that wanted the points to boost their chances of securing a Copa Libertadores group stage ticket. Atletico looked… brave, having, either way, nothing to lose. At this point, their hopes of avoiding relegation are mostly mathematical, they know that, and when you are one punch away from getting knocked out, little can scare you. Atletico have back-to-back wins, but they’re still at the bottom of the table, six whole points behind Vitoria, the first team right above the relegation line. To avoid relegation they need to win their three remaining games as well, and hope for a… crazy combination of other results. As I wrote in the match preview of their previous game, every match day that passes and they remain alive, mathematically, is something, for them. To remain alive, mathematically, in their… struggle to avoid relegation, they absolutely must beat Chapecoense.
Chapecoense came from behind midweek to beat Vitoria at home, a totally deserved win, that should have been even bigger (score-wise), since the assistant referee disallowed a perfectly good Chape goal in the second half, before Chapecoense’s second goal. A… cataclysmic rain fell in Chapeco during half time, turning the pitch into a dozen mini lakes. The hosts, somehow, figured out very soon how to take advantage of that, while the visitors spent most of the second half running behind their opponents, trying to keep them from scoring. Chapecoense are 10th, on 47 points, with excellent chances of playing Copa Sudamericana football next season. More than that, they are still dreaming of getting a Libertadores ticket, even though they will need some very favorable results for that to happen.

Atletico have hosted Chape just once before, in 2013 (Serie B). That game ended in a goalless draw.
Atletico Goianiense vs Chapecoense: Prediction
Chapecoense have lost just one of their last six matches away from home, and I doubt they will throw this very good streak to the trash bin in Goias.
