Atletico Goianiense vs Ponte Preta
Competition: Brazilian Serie A
Date: 9 June 2017
Kick-off: 00:30 CET
Four defeats in as many games, 1-11 goals, no wonder coach Marcelo Cabo was dismissed on Tuesday. By Brazilian standards, losing four consecutive times is reason enough to lose your job. Technically, Cabo resigned, but either way he wouldn’t have stayed, even if he hadn’t ‘volunteered’ to leave the team. Actually, after just four games, one fourth of Serie A teams have already changed coach, that’s 25% of the clubs, in, I repeat, less than a month. Joao Paulo, Cabo’s assistant until a couple of days ago, is going to lead the team from the bench in this game, and it remains to be seen how fast the board of directors will move to bring in Cabo’s long-term (as ‘long-term’ as any coach can be in Brazil), replacement.
Coach Gilson Kleina would love to start the game with the same eleven he did against Sao Paulo last weekend, but he can’t. Ponte Preta have over half a dozen players who are either injured, or have recovered from injuries, but are not yet fit to play. On top of that, they have players like center-forward Emerson Sheik, who did play against Sao Paulo, but there is no way he can last more than 45 minutes, since he had stayed out for months. All in all, Kleina finds himself in a position to be obliged to experiment, try using players in positions that are not their ‘natural’ ones, and… see what happens. Ponte Preta beat Sao Paulo 1-0 last weekend, and with seven points in four games they can feel very satisfied.
Atletico Goianiense vs Ponte Preta: Head-to-head Stats
Three of the last four games between these two with Atletico as hosts have ended in a draw, with the home team winning the other match.
Atletico Goianiense vs Ponte Preta: Prediction
Ponte Preta are considered slight favorites to pick up all three points. It remains to be seen how the resignation/dismissal of Cabo will affect the hosts. Everything considered, I’m backing the visitors not to lose, and, taking a leap of faith in them, I can see them win, even by the slightest of margins.
Atletico Goianiense vs Ponte Preta: Tips
‘Draw or Ponte Preta’ is at just 1.42. Obviously we need something much better than that. As previously mentioned, I feel Ponte Preta have done enough these first four game weeks to be backed to win games like this, against undeniably weaker sides like Atletico Goianiense. A win of the visitors pays a very good 2.50.
