Atletico Madrid vs Lokomotiv Moscow
Competition: UEFA Europa League
Date: 8 March 2018
Kick-off: 19:00 CET
After six consecutive wins in LaLiga, Atlético Madrid had managed to close the gap on leaders Barcelona to five points, giving new interest in Spain’s championship. A win at Camp Nou would have put the title race on fire, but Diego Simeone’s side looked second best on the pitch for 90 minutes, and lost 1-0. It took a moment of Lionel Messi brilliance to break Atleti’s defence, but someone could say that Leo’s goal did the game justice, as Atlético were practically harmless offensively, and if they had left Barcelona with a point that would have been a super flattering result for them. There are several games left in Spain’s championship, the eight-point gap is not impossible to close again, but… realistically looking at this, Atleti are left with super few chances to revert the situation. In the previous Europa League round they beat FC Copenhagen twice. Centre-back Stefan Savic is injured and unavailable, but he is the only player on whom Simeone cannot count. The Argentine has the rest of his guys at his disposal. According to reports in Spain, Juanfran and Ángel Correa will be in the starting lineup.
Lokomotiv Moscow hadn’t played an official game in over two months when they visited Nice in the previous Europa League round, but they beat them away, they beat them again at home, showing Europe’s fans why they are leading in Russia’s championship. The Premier League there restarted last weekend, Lokomotiv got stuck to a 0-0 draw at home against third-placed Spartak Moscow, but are still leaders, clear ones, seven whole points ahead of second-placed Krasnodar. Off the pitch, it will be interesting to see how Lokomotiv’s fans will do in Madrid. Russian fans have created all sorts of problems this season with their team’s playing abroad, and UEFA’s attention is on them, ready to take action against the clubs themselves.

“Atlético Madrid and under 2.5 goals” pays 2.60 and is my main tip, suiting my 2-0 hunch. “Atlético to win and keep a clean sheet” is at 1.57, low, but maybe good enough for some of you.
