Atletico Mineiro vs Ponte Preta
Competition: Brazilian Serie A
Date: 28 May 2017
Kick-off: 16:00 CET
Ten days ago, Atletico Mineiro beat Godoy Cruz 4-1 at home, celebrating in the best possible way their qualification for the last 16 of this season’s Copa Libertadores. After that though, came a 2-1 defeat at home to Fluminense, in the championship, and last Wednesday they lost again, 3-2, at Parana, in the first leg of their Copa do Brasil tie. Atletico took the lead twice, but couldn’t even earn a draw. The return leg is the coming Wednesday in Belo Horizonte. These last days, the club took care of the last details regarding Valdivia’s arrival from Internacional. The Brazilian right winger will be an awesome addition to Atletico’s already rich roster.
Ponte Preta were impressive against Sport Recife on the first day of the new championship, they thrashed them 4-0, but last weekend they lost practically with their hands down at Botafogo. Obviously, playing against them in Rio de Janeiro wasn’t going to be easy, but still, they could have put in a much-much better performance. Coach Gilson Kleina admitted that he will make changes in this game, really dissatisfied with what he saw last weekend. With attackers William Pottker and Clayson gone (to Internacional and Corinthians respectively), and with Emerson Sheik still out of form, he has to trust either Claudinho or Leo Artur to play next to Lucca, who seems to be the only striker sure to be included in the first eleven. It remains to be seen if midfielder Renato Caja is fit to play. He was signed from Bahia, he looked out of place at first, then he got injured, but he’s almost ready to play, and his presence in the midfield could really improve things at Ponte Preta.
Atletico Mineiro vs Ponte Preta: Head-to-head Stats
Three wins for Atletico Mineiro the last five times they hosted Ponte Preta. The other two games had no winner.
Atletico Mineiro vs Ponte Preta: Prediction
Atletico Mineiro should win. They have a return leg of a Copa do Brasil tie coming up in a few days, but it’s at home, and against lowly Parana, so despite losing the first game, they should still feel confident enough to qualify, and in any case, it shouldn’t distract them from this game. Against Botafogo, Ponte Preta looked very disappointing. They have lost three of their last five games away from home, drawing twice, and scoring just two goals along the way.
Atletico Mineiro vs Ponte Preta: Tips
Atletico’s win pays just 1.40. To more than double my money I would bet on them to win and the game to have at least three goals. This pays 2.10.
