Atletico Paranaense vs Botafogo
Competition: Brazilian Serie A
Date: 21 July 2017
Kick-off: 02:00 CET
Atletico Paranaense may be having a poor season in the Brasileirao so far, but last weekend they caused one of the biggest upsets, holding leaders Corinthians to a 2-2 draw. Their new coach, Fabiano Soares, has his papers ready, on Tuesday his name was published in the Brazilian Confederation’s ‘Boletim Informativo Diário’, which means that against Botafogo he will finally get to lead the team from the bench, instead of a seat in the stands. Same day, Atletico fans were left perplexed, realizing that the contract of one of their strikers, Ederson, was terminated(!). The club were quick to explain the situation, it’s just part of a bureaucratic procedure, the player remains at Atletico on loan from Japanese side Kashiwa Reysol, and should remain at Atletico until the end of the Brasileirao season.
What a week for Botafogo… First, they beat Fluminense 1-0, a ‘special’ victory given that it was over a ‘fellow’ Rio de Janeiro team. Then, they managed to put an end to Sport Recife’s incredible run of wins and clean sheets. The paradox with Botafogo is that they are in the top six (leading to next season’s Copa Libertadores), having a really poor scoring record. From the teams that feature from 1st (Corinthians) to 14th (Bahia), only Santos have scored less than Botafogo. Interestingly, against Sport, it was Rodrigo Lindoso and Guilherme who scored. For the former, it was just his second goal in the season. For the latter, the first(!). On Tuesday, 27-year-old midfielder Camilo left for Internacional, and 23-year-old striker Brenner made the opposite trip, joining Botafogo from the Porto Alegre side.
Atletico Paranaense vs Botafogo: Head-to-head Stats
Atletico have an awesome record against Botafogo as hosts, they have beaten them in the last six games in Curitiba.
Atletico Paranaense vs Botafogo: Prediction
Atletico have back-to-back losses at home (including the 2-3 to Santos in the Copa Libertadores), while Botafogo have back-to-back wins on the road, at Nacional (Montevideo, Libertadores) and Fluminense, keeping a clean sheet in both games. Even so, betting companies consider Atletico favorites to win. Personally, I’m backing Botafogo to get at least a draw.
Atletico Paranaense vs Botafogo: Tips
‘Draw or Botafogo’ pays 1.70. Botafogo’s last four away games had one goal each. Betting on the game to have no more than just one goal, at 2.75, may be worth the risk.
