Atletico Paranaense vs Flamengo
Competition: Brazilian Serie A
Date: 28 May 2017
Kick-off: 21:00 CET
Two defeats in two games in the Serie A, but, a massive win at Universidad Catolica, this is what Atletico Paranaense have to show for these last two weeks. Their 6-2 humiliation on the first day of the championship was followed by their qualification for the last 16 of the Copa Libertadores, before returning to losing, 2-0, at home, to Gremio, last weekend. Great news for Atletico the last couple of days was that Emerson, the Serie A’s top scorer in 2013 (he scored 21 goals wearing Atletico’s jersey) is back. He still ‘belongs’ to Japanese side Kashiwa Reysol, but he spent the last year at Vasco da Gama, on loan. The Rio de Janeiro club informed him that he could look for another team, he did, his first choice was Atletico Paranaense, the Curitiba club opened their arms, so he’s back, and judging by something his wife posted on Instagram, he couldn’t be happier.
Flamengo’s loss, was Atletico Paranaense’s gain in the Copa Libertadores. What happened in the last ten minutes of their games on the last day of the group stage left ‘Fla’ out, and sent Atletico to the last 16 of the competition. After that, Flamengo bounced back with two wins over Atletico Goianiense, both away from home, in the championship and the Copa do Brasil, 3-0 and 2-1 respectively. Even so, Peruvian striker Paolo Guerrero admitted that “the wound is still open”, meaning that what happened to the team in the Copa Libertadores is anything but behind them, mentally, psychologically. Guerrero scored in Flamengo’s 2-1 at Atletico Goianiense on Wednesday, but it was the other scorer of ‘Fla’, 20-year-old Matheus Savio (he scored the winning goal in the 80th minute) who found himself at the center of the media’s attention. The youngster, who got heavily criticized after Flamengo’s failure in the Copa Libertadores, as if the team relied on his 20-year-old shoulders, burst into tears after scoring, and later thanked his coach and teammates for their support.

Atletico Paranaense vs Flamengo: Prediction
Betting companies give almost even chances to both teams to win, which shows how tight the game is expected to be. Taking a leap of faith, I’m backing the visitors to pick up all three points, riding the wave created by their back-to-back wins over Atletico Goianiense in a matter of just five days.
