Atromitos vs AEK Athens
Competition: Greece Cup
Date: 7 February 2019
Kick-off: 18:30 CET
Atromitos beat AEL in Larissa last weekend, their first victory is six Super League matches, but the name of the scorer drew at least as much attention as the score itself; Giorgos Manousos spent the best part of the last year and a half injured, hadn’t scored in a Super League game since September 2017(!), was declared match-fit just 10 days ago, was given game time by his coach, and was the one who scored the only goal of the match in the 89th minute. After thanking God, he ran to the bench and hugged Atromitos physiotherapist, a man he spent a lot of time with these last months. The Peristeri side are fourth in the championship, finishing in the top two feels practically impossible, so their priority is to avoid dropping 5th. A Cup semifinals ticket, and a probable presence in the final, would turn a “good” season into a “very great” season.
AEK’s chances of retaining their… controversially obtained – last season – Super League title would be few even if they had beaten PAOK last weekend, but the fact that they failed to win in a match they played 11 vs 10 for more than 60 minutes, pretty much sums up their season. They are simply not good enough to make it “two championship titles in a row”, they are not even good enough to finish in the top two, and try their luck in the Champions League qualifiers next year. On Monday, coach Marinos Ouzounidis informed the president that he wanted out, feeling that he can’t help the team. It took Dimitris Melissanidis a day, but he accepted Ouzounidis’ decision, a man who was the president’s personal choice for the job last summer. Spaniard Manolo Jiménez, the man who led AEK to last season’s championship title, was expected in Athens Tuesday night to take over. The way things stand, winning their Cup is their only chance of… saving the season. Remember, they lost the last two finals, both to PAOK.

“Both teams to score” is a bet I like in this match. At 2.05, it’s my main tip. Combined with “over 2.5 goals”, it pays 2.85.
