Atromitos vs PAOK
Competition: Greek Super League
Date: 5 April 2017
Kick-off: 16:15 CET
Looking at how Atromitos have been doing ever since Sa Pinto took charge, you notice a pattern. First, they played four games against teams that are weaker than them, or slightly better than them (Xanthi), and they won them all, even though in three out of four cases they needed a goal in the last five minutes. Then, a series of three extra difficult games came, against top teams, Olympiakos, AEK, Panionios. They lost them all, but at least they gave a good fight, excluding maybe the first game at Piraeus. PAOK are a top team, so someone’s mind could go to the… self-evident, that Atromitos simply cannot cope with teams of that level, but… (continue reading)
For weeks now, I have been writing that PAOK are without key players, adding though that their roster is deep enough to cope with almost any obligatory absences. In this particular game, coach Ivic has a rather short list of absentees, just three names there, but despite beating Larissa at home last weekend, as well as Panionios three weeks ago, it was made all too clear that PAOK are struggling to cope with Prijovic’s absence, since their… traditional top scorer, Athanasiadis, has been having the worst season of his career. Adding injury to insult, attacking midfielder Mystakidis, a guy who has given numerous solutions offensively, got seriously injured against Larissa and will stay out for six months(!). Pelkas, the golden scorer against Panionios, is still out, because of the inexcusable gesture he made after scoring that goal, resulting in a red card and a two-match ban. Last, it’s still unclear if Ivic will play Egyptian midfielder Warda, following the bad impressions he created returning to Thessaloniki after the recent international break later than scheduled, missing a flight from Cairo, because, as his father said, “he fell asleep at the airport”(!).
Atromitos vs PAOK: Head-to-head Stats
One win for Atromitos, one draw, and one win for PAOK, in their last three games in Peristeri. In the first round game this season, PAOK were 3-1 up with about 15 minutes left, but, this is not a typo mistake, the final score was 3-4!!!!
Atromitos vs PAOK: Prediction
Despite PAOK winning their last two games (without even conceding) and Atromitos losing their last three, in this specific game I don’t see PAOK winning, no matter how big favourites they are considered to take all three points.
Atromitos vs PAOK: Tips
Atromitos or draw, at 2.00, is my suggestion for this game. Atromitos have been struggling offensively even on days they ended up winning, PAOK have kept a clean sheet in three of their last four Super League games, so someone could draw the conclusion that this should be a low-scoring game, but remembering what happened between these two in the first round this season, I wouldn’t touch the goals’ sector, I’d stick to Atromitos not losing the game, or, if you want to go all in, draw at 3.40 is definitely far more probable than an Atromitos win.
