Banfield vs San Martin San Juan
Competition: Argentina Superliga
Date: 25 January 2019
Kick-off: 23:00 CET
Banfield finished 2018 sitting 10th in the Superliga table, on 21 points from 15 matches. They have a new coach; Julio Falcioni had to leave his post because of his serious health issue, and former Argentina international, a true legend, Hernán Crespo, has taken over. This is the first time he’s working in Argentina as a coach. Attacking midfielder Reinaldo Lenis joined from Atlético Nacional, Colombia, and winger Matías Moya was loaned out to Banfield by River Plate. On the other hand, four players left, and among them, a club icon, striker Darío Cvitanich, who wanted to move to Racing Club. Right-back Rodrigo Arciero got seriously injured a few days ago, and is expected to stay out for no less than eight months(!).
San Martín San Juan are 23rd in the 2018/2019 Superliga table, but 22nd in the promedio table, the one that really matters. In other words, if the season were over today, San Martín would be right above the relegation line (it’s the last four who get relegated). Rubén Darío Forestello remains the coach. Three players joined, and interestingly, no one left – yet. The club president told reporters there are “many” offers by other clubs for San Martín players, and half-implied that at least one or two will be sold, and the money will be used to sign even more players, other than the three they have already signed.
