Barcelona vs Borussia Monchengladbach
Competition: UEFA Champions League
Date: 06 December 2016
Kick-off: 20:45 CET
Barcelona have nothing to worry about in terms of qualifying for the next round of the Champions League, in fact, they have also secured top spot making their game with Gladbach a mere formality. However, for the Germans, there is still something left to play for.
Barcelona, who have almost become synonymous with making it through to the upper end of the Champions League, hardly struggled in their group which contained the likes of Manchester City and even Gladbach to an extent. The Spanish giants did lose a game to the English team, and it was a bit of a shock, but their results elsewhere have been more than impressive enough to see them currently four points clear of City and impossible to catch. Their best result was probably a 4-0 hammering of their former manager’s club Manchester City at the Camp Nou, but they also looked good across four games scoring 16 goals and only conceding four.
For Gladbach, there is still a chance for them to qualify ahead of City heading into this last game – but there is a lot to be done, and they will also depend on a result for Celtic against the English side. It all has to start with a win for Gladbach, which will get them to eight points, equal with City, they will then need to score six goals against Barcelona to overtake the English side. From there, they will need Celtic to win, and for the Scots to keep City scoreless, and if all these factors take place, it will be Gladbach who qualifies over City. Unfortunately for the Germans, this is so improbable that is barely needs contemplating.
Barcelona vs Borussia Monchengladbach: Previous encounter
The last time these teams met at Borussia Park, it was a close win for the Spanish giants as they walked away with all three points thanks to a 2-1 win. Thorgan Hazard opened the scoring for the Germans in the first half, and it needed two late strikes from first Arda Turan and then Gerard Pique to sink the hopes of the Germans.
Barcelona vs Borussia Monchengladbach: Prediction
Only a huge optimist would give Gladbach a chance of even getting into a qualifying spot with the need of six goals, but to even back them for the win would be foolish. No doubt Enrique will play a bit of a B-Team for this meaningless match for the Spanish side, but they still have such depth and firepower it will be tough for Gladbach to emerge winners. Expect Barcelona to win again, and probably again by a 2-1 scoreline.
Barcelona vs Borussia Monchengladbach: Tips
Messi is the top scorer with nine goals, nine of Barcelona’s total 16 goals, so should he start the match, he will look to add to that tally – but there is also Suarez and Neymar who have been scoring in La Liga all season to consider.
