Bath vs Newcastle Falcons
Competition: Aviva Premiership Rugby
Date: 23 September 2017
Kick off: 16:00 CET
Both Bath and the Falcons came crashing back to earth last week as their run of wins ended with a loss each. They were very different losses, but they both would have dented the respective confidences.
Bath, after looking like the real deal against some tough opposition in the opening round were totally outplayed when they travelled to Northampton to take on a Saints side that had not had the best start to the tournament. Bath ended up losing the game by 18 points, but what is worse is that they did not score any tries. They were kept down to just two penalties as the Saints ruled the roost. Before that however they managed to firstly down the Leicester Tigers away from home in a close four point game. Then they took on the might Saracens at home and beat them by 10 points in the end. Bath are back at home for this one, and technically, the Falcons are probably the weakest team they would have faced, thus they can feel like this is a game to aim for to get momentum back.
The Falcons will also be a little disrupted coming into this game as not only are they coming off a loss, they managed to lose all the way in the USA as Newcastle and Saracens played an exhibition match. It will be a game for the Falcons to forget as they faced a Saracens side that had all their Lions back and a full strength side, which managed to turn them down by 22 points as the Falcons scored just the one try. However, before that, Newcastle were unbeaten through two as they opened their campaign with a huge 27 point mauling of the Warriors at home, and then followed it up with the tightest of wins against Sale, on the road – by one point. No doubt Bath are in the same bracket as Saracens in terms of class, and because the USA game counted as a home game for the Falcons, they are on the road again for the third week in a row.
