Benfica vs CSKA Moscow
Competition: UEFA Champions League
Date: 12 September 2017
Kick-off: 20:45 CET
Having won the championship in Portugal last season, Benfica Lisbon didn’t need to go through qualifiers. In five matches so far in the new Primeira Liga season, they have four wins and one draw. Still, those 13 points have them only third in the table, behind Porto and Sporting, who are still to drop points this season. Benfica have almost 10 new faces compared to last year, some of them signed on permanent deals (like Haris Seferovic, ex-Eintracht Frankfurt, who joined them on a free transfer), and some on loan, like Gabriel Barbosa, who left Brazil for Inter a year ago, but was a major disappointment in Milan, with the Italian side more than willing to loan him out for a season.
Unlike Benfica, CSKA Moscow had to go through qualifiers to secure a spot in the group stage. They earned four victories in as many matches, without even conceding a single goal. They eliminated AEK Athens beating them 1-0 and 2-0, same with Young Boys in the playoffs, again, 1-0 and 2-0, leaving no doubt that they are a team that deserve to be in the group stage of the Champions League. In Russia’s championship they have 16 points in nine matches. Last Friday they won 1-0 at Amkar Perm, bouncing back from a home defeat to Akhmat Grozny.
